Né à Toulouse, Laurent Esquerré est diplômé des Beaux-Arts de Paris
en 1992, avec les félicitations du jury. Il vit et travaille aujourd’hui à
Paris et Arcueil. Son séjour à Naples en 2000 marque un tournant
dans sa carrière artistique : c’est à l’occasion de ce voyage qu’il
tombe amoureux de la céramique et choisit la terre pour modeler
ses chimères. En 2013, une résidence à l’atelier Ceramica Santoriello
en Italie marque un tournant dans sa pratique monumentale.
S’ensuivent le Lièvre San Gennaro (116, Montreuil, 2016) et la
commande publique Les Quatre Vivants pour la cathédrale de
Rennes(2019).

Born in Toulouse, Laurent Esquerré graduated with honors from the
Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1992. He now lives and works in Paris and
Arcueil. A pivotal moment in his artistic career came in 2000 during
a stay in Naples, where he fell in love with ceramics and chose clay
as the medium to shape his chimeras. In 2013, a residency at the
Ceramica Santoriello studio in Italy marked a turning point in his
monumental practice. This led to works such as San Gennaro’s
Hare (116, Montreuil, 2016) and the public commission The Four Living
Creatures for the Rennes Cathedral (2019).

Dans sa pratique, l’artiste se nourrit des mythes et légendes issus de
la culture populaire, de l’histoire de l’art ou encore de la littérature. La Nature se métamorphose librement et sous nos yeux selon ses
propres lois, dans lesquelles l’Homme, dont l’artiste emprunte
également quelques attributs, n’a aucune prééminence. Poétiques,
inquiétantes, parfois grinçantes, ses créatures hybrides n’en sont
pas moins foncièrement attachantes.

In his practice, the artist draws inspiration from myths and legends
rooted in popular culture, art history, and literature. Nature
metamorphoses freely before our eyes, according to its own laws.
Laws in which humankind, whose attributes the artist also borrows
at times, holds no supremacy. Poetic, unsettling, and at times biting,
his hybrid creatures remain profoundly endearing.
