The Junction is a series of works created by Sasha Brodsky in the Fall of 2022 / beginning of 2023. The word Junction comes from the name of the East New York train station located next to his studio where the pieces were completed. As with all Brodsky’s work, these cityscapes are closely based on observations of New York and Brooklyn in particular, however they do not depict any real place. Instead, they present an abstract image of a city caught on the cusp of inevitable change.
Much like Brodsky’s prints and drawings, this series explores the theme of steadily disappearing character of urban landscape. The Junction continues the artist’s search for immutable qualities that shape authentic nature of a city. Its solitary inhabitants are scattered around empty lots and abandoned construction sites, surrounded by particles of junk and other integral artifacts of metropolitan decay. The relationship between these figures and their environment is crucial — the characters of The Junction define the landscape as much as architecture.
